Interview Crush: The New Collisions' Scott Guild gives us the skinny. See them TONIGHT at the Middle East down!

This has been The New Collisions' year, due to both their incredible breakout success... and the fact that this is pretty much the only year they've been in existence. How did they do it? We asked guitarist Scott Guild to tell us their story...

BBC: First, introduce yourselves...
SG: Sarah Guild: vocals; Scott Guild: guitar; Alex Stern: bass/vocals; Casey Gruttadauria: synth/keys; Zak Kahn: drums

BBC: You guys shot up seemingly out of nowhere; what are the origins of the band? How'd you meet, come together, get to where you are ...
SG: Sarah and I had been traveling around since we dropped out of college in Vermont. We wanted to pour all our energy and what little money we had into something meaningful, that could take up all our attention. We started The New Collisions under a year ago, and luckily the right musicians spiraled into our lives shortly after we moved to Boston. Alex and Casey and Zak are about the best band one could hope for; it quickly became a mutual enterprise between all of us, to tour, record, and take over the damn world.

BBC: So you call up Greg Hawkes...
SG: Actually, it was Myspace. And he wrote right back. An extraordinary human being!

BBC: You get the news that you've been tapped to open for The B-52s and Blondie. You say:
SG: "$@#%@#%@#%@#%. What time is load-in?"

BBC: How'd that happen anyway?
SG: Basically, our Boston buzz had reached the right ears. We received a call from the William Morris agency asking if we'd like to open a few local shows. When those went well, we went all over the country with them. And when that went well, we got to be direct support for Blondie. It was quite a summer.

BBC: From personal experience, The B-52s are:
SG: approachable, brilliant, and awesome.

BBC: Which of your new BFFs are your moms most psyched about: Greg Hawkes, Debbie Harry or The B-52s?
SG: Everyone was a huge Blondie fan, band moms included, so that got the biggest freak-out. As an aside, it's a bit disturbing how similar our taste in music is to our parents.

BBC: Ok back to you... What's your typical songwriting routine?
SG: Write a song. Think it's brilliant. A week later, scrap it. Write another song. Also think it's brilliant. A week later, scrap it. Write a third song. Like the chorus. Take stuff from the first two songs and put it in the third song. The next morning, scrap everything so far. Two days later, have a song occur to me while standing in line at the ATM. This song is usually pretty good. It usually gets scrapped as well, but it has the best shot.

BBC: And of course, the mandatory BBC question: What Boston bands are you crushing on right now?
SG: Boston is full of insanely good music right now. Off the top of my head: Freezepop, The Everyday Visuals, The Luxury, The Sterns, The Motion Sick.
