C.D. on Songs : The Stereo Flys : "Kalifornien"

What? You want more? That's a good thing, because there's another submission from an excellent band that is also playing tomorrow (refer to earlier 4/20 jokes). This time, head over to TT the Bear's to catch The Stereo Flys with Planeside, The Self Assembly and Paul Michel (we assume not the haircare dude). Seems that The Stereo Flys are releasing their record, and if "Kalifornien" is any clue as to the sound of this record, you want it. You want it bad.

The Stereo Flys - "Kalifornien"

This song has a bona fide life-force unto itself. Seriously. Like if your car runs out of gas, you may be able to coast home on the power provided by "Kalifornien," if you merely put it on your car stereo. From whence does this song's power come? In a word - everywhere you look.

Almost every instrument sound in "Kalifornien" has a crunch to it, as if the entire song was run through a tube pre-amp dialed just past the "fuzz" option. That's a good thing - it gives the track a new dimension of texture past the short-attention span presence of an irascible guitar and bass combo that downright refuse to hold still, even for a second.

The bass is a little fuzzy and the guitar has its own delicious raggedy edges, both propelled by a drum track that doesn't sound like a drum kit but rather a series of explosions that just happen to sound like cymbal and drum. "Kalifornien" has an undeniable energy, but it also has a comfortable seat for that energy, coloring just outside the edges and avoiding outright mass hysteria. Just a sort of controlled and highly entertaining mini-hysteria.

Want to submit your band's song to C.D. On Songs?
To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line "C.D. on Songs" (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don't, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we'll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that's not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
