C.D. On Songs : Felix and Volcano! - "Boku-Maru"

It's Friday, dudes. You know what means, you want to go out and see something. You want to see something good. If you want to see something good in Somerville, then I highly recommend going to P.A.'s Lounge tonight in Somerville. First off, I hear they have pizza there now, so maybe you want to check that out. But what you really need to check out are these Felix and Volcano! kids. I will tell you now that, after hearing them, I fully understand their need for what initially seems like superfluous punctuation. Yes! ! !

I don't know what this means, but one of the cats really, really likes this song. I think it's a little more than the simple "Here, kitty kitty!" vocal tone. I'm going to dismiss the whole "Felix the Cat" coincidence of the band's name and assume that maybe the cat has some latent song-reviewing skills.

What Freckles the cat and I recognize in "Boku-Maru" is a certain musical vibrancy that comes through in almost every note and sound in the song. It's like their mastering studio has a "Fun!" dial on their console somewhere and cranked that SOB to 11. This song sounds like it was an absolute blast to write and record, and they managed to cram that sense into the listening part as well.

The sounds in this song range from the semi-ridiculous-but-still-fun synth brass to the joyful, full-band "Woo!" to a high-pitched, open synth melody at 2:47 that the cat really, really digs. While Felix and Volcano! seem to have scooped the cat demo, I think they have a pretty good shot with the humans as well.

Want to submit your band's song to C.D. On Songs?
To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line "C.D. on Songs" (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don't, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we'll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that's not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
